Charles River Canal Pedestrian Bridge
A new link between the cities of Boston and Cambridge requires a movable bridge to be located over the historic canal adjacent to the Charles River. The proposed cable supported bridge will consist of four slender towers and steel cables that will allow movement of the bridge. The towers will rotate to enable the opening and closing of the bridge like a traditional bascule bridge. The clear span over the canal will be approximately 75' (23m) with a total length of 175' (53m) including access ramps. The bridge will be very transparent and will fit within the historical context of the old dam complex acting as a new gateway into the river from Boston's harbor.
