The new crossing of Interstate 265 over the Ohio River between Indiana and Kentucky includes an elegant and unusual cable stayed bridge. The East End Bridge will have a main span of 1,200' (366m) and an overall length of 2,100' (640m) over the river. The bridge deck is approximately 153' (46.5m) wide and includes a wide pedestrian and bicycle trail. The bridge has two needle towers 300' (91.5m) in height with architecture reminiscent of the recreational boats in the area. By introducing a variable depth box superstructure that takes the loads directly to the towers, the stay cables next to the towers can be omitted, making the bridge transparent in appearance. A series of openings have been utilized between opposing traffic decks to allow sunlight to reach the water, reducing the mass of the wide deck. The bridge integrates well into the beautiful landscape due to its simplicity, elegance and uncluttered underside.
