Fore River Bridge Replacement
The new Fore River Bridge will replace the temporary structure that currently connects the cities of Weymouth and Quincy. The vertical lift movable bridge has towers of approximately 300' (91.5m) in height and includes accommodations for 12' (3.5m) travel lanes, 5' (1.5m) bicycle accommodating shoulders and 6.5' (2m) sidewalks in both directions; the bridge will have a 250' (76m) navigable opening. The new bridge has been integrated into the urban context of the area and its architecture is inspired by the art deco detailing of the 1936 bridge that was demolished in 2004. Special detailing has been provided to enclose all utilities, stairs and elevators along the entire height of the two elegant towers. Stainless steel high strength mesh will provide a surface that will be attractive during the day and night. The bridge will be illuminated with blue LED lighting that will enhance the gateway experience across the Fore River and the South Shore.
